Perperikon southern Bulgarian Ancient Holy Temple archaeological site
A visit to the ancient Holy Temple at Perperikon is a must, this archaeological site with its sacrifical alters was discovered recently. Hidden for centuries by the trees. It is said that humans first arrived at this major Bulgarian City before 5000 BC. Bronze age artifacts and ceramics that have been unearthed by archaeologists so Perperikon dates back to the early iron age of man. There is a huge altar which has been carved out of rock and evidence that the Romans built a mighty palace that is believed to be the Queens room. To back up this theory at Perperikon, a church pulpit was revealed that dates back to when the Bulgarian people were being forced into Christianity.
On your arrival at Tatul the Tomb of Orpheus, you will be greeted with a sign located just outside the Tomb, which points you to a local Bulgarian cafe, appropriately named Tatul.
Archaeologists have been working very hard over the years to restore Tatul the Tomb of Orpheus (newer photos) back to its former glory.
Roads have now been put in place, making the journey easier, although it is still difficult to get to. The renovation and conservation of the Sanctuary of Orpheus at Tatul is co-financed by the European Union and the Republic of Bulgaria
